GRD® BALLISTA – Bolt-Action Precision Payload Platform for ASTRAL

For our self-funded futuristic FPS title ASTRAL, we needed a bolt-action rifle that delivers serious impact while staying true to our core design philosophy: systems-based thinking that creates believable, functional hard-surface futures.

The result is the GRD® BALLISTA — a modern, robust, and highly modular payload delivery system that feels grounded yet unmistakably advanced.

Challenge

Create a powerful bolt-action rifle that feels familiar to players while pushing futuristic aesthetics. The weapon had to support gameplay mechanics, modular attachments, in-game animation requirements, and the advanced manufacturing lore of the ASTRAL universe.

Approach

We began with the heart of the weapon system: the cartridge. Every subsequent decision flowed from this foundation.

Cartridge & Core Architecture
We designed a proprietary 9.7x70mm tapered cartridge optimized for high chamber pressure and reliable extraction. This choice directly dictated the magazine shape, magwell geometry, receiver dimensions, and bolt interface — ensuring every component works in harmony rather than as isolated parts.


Ergonomics & Human Interface

From the earliest stages we established ergonomic landmarks: grip scaled to the human hand, trigger guard and trigger positioned for natural finger placement, magazine release accessible under stress, and stock dimensions balanced for cheek weld and aim offset. Proper scaling and proportions are essential for both believability and in-game usability.

Modularity & Future-Proofing

ASTRAL requires extensive gunsmithing options. We designed the BALLISTA with a modular architecture supporting interchangeable handguards, folding/collapsing stocks, grips, and attachments. All mounting points use proven real-world standards (Picatinny rails and M-LOK) for immediate familiarity and cross-compatibility across the weapon ecosystem.

Materials & Manufacturing Logic

The design incorporates advanced meta-material additive processes from the GRD® lore, allowing complex geometry that would be impossible with traditional machining. Screws, bolts, and fasteners follow realistic industrial dimensions (e.g., M3-based custom variants), adding authenticity while being practical for film props or real-world manufacturing.

Aesthetics & Visual Language

Every surface detail serves a purpose. There is no random greebling — only functional elements that reinforce confidence and authority. The overall form is clean, balanced, and grounded, making the BALLISTA feel like a serious tool rather than a sci-fi prop.

Process & Tools

  • Modeling: Entirely in Moi3D for maximum precision and manufacturing-ready geometry.

  • Rendering: KeyShot for photorealistic visualization and material accuracy.

  • Integration: Imported into Unreal Engine for in-game pipeline testing, animation compatibility, and real-time validation.
